CURRICULUM VITAE
ERNEST SAI-YUN CHIU, M.D.
DOB:
9/21/67
PLACE OF BIRTH:
Baton Rouge, Louisiana
|
| |
|
| ......................................................................................................................... |
| I was born in Baton Rouge, LA, and graduated from Baton
Rouge Magnet High School in 1985. After completing my undergraduate
studies at the University of California, Berkeley, I studied medicine
at Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. Subsequently, I
matched for residency in the Coordinated Plastic Surgery Program at
New York University Medical Center (Institute of Reconstructive Plastic
Surgery) where I did my residency training. Recently, I completed
a one-year Microsurgery/Breast fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering
Cancer Center in 2004. Throughout my training, I have been extremely
interested in basic and clinical research, and have worked with many
world class physicians and scientists at UCSF School of Medicine (San
Francisco), Harvard Medical School (Boston), University of Washington
Medical Center (Seattle), and NYU Skirball Biomolecular Research Institute
(New York). I have also visited many well-known plastic surgery units
throughout the world to enhance my plastic surgical knowledge and
skills.
After almost 20 years away, my family and I are excited to return
to Louisiana. I'm an Assistant Professor of Surgery (Plastic Surgery)
at the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. I specialize in
congenital and acquired deformities of the face and breast. Using
a variety of techniques, including microvascular free tissue transfer,
local flaps, and implants, my colleagues and I aim to restore and
repair the appearance and function of the human body. I have particular
interest in facial abnormalities, facial reamination, vascular anomalies,
nerve regeneration, breast reconstruction, ear reconstruction, wound
repair, and aesthetic surgery.
Currently, I am the Director of the LSU Plastic Surgery Research
Lab. In collaboration with the Tulane School of Medicine's Center
for Gene Therapy, we are studying the role of mesenchymal stem cells
in nerve regeneration and wound repair. Our lab is also interested
understanding how angiogenesis and adipogenesis can repair tissue.
