I was born in Buffalo, New York where I remained until matriculating
to Georgetown University in 1989. I graduated in May 1993 and worked
briefly as a neonatal intensive care nurse before returning home
to attend medical school. In 1999, I graduated from the State University
of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine and moved to Los Angeles,
California to complete my training in Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA.
During my residency at UCLA, I became fascinated with microsurgery,
and its potential uses outside of otolaryngology. Therefore, I entered
plastic surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina
in July 2005. I had the opportunity there to work with Dr. Robert
J. Allen, the pioneer of perforator flaps in Breast Reconstruction.
Upon my graduation in July 2007 I began a Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction
Fellowship with Dr. Allen, which I completed in December 2007. In
February 2008, I traveled to Paris France to train in microsurgical
lymph node transfer to treat upper and lower extremity lymphedema
with Dr. Corrine Becker.
I have been involved in research for many years, initially while
at Georgetown University and continuing during my time at UCLA.
There I began studying the utility of Curcumin in the treatment
of head and neck cancer, a project that ultimately won first prize
at the 2004 Triological Society and led to a National Institute
of Health research grant in November 2006. My interest in research
has led to a number of national and international publications since
beginning Plastic Surgery training as well.
My practice will have an emphasis of microsurgical
lymph node transfer and breast reconstruction using perforator
flaps including the DIEP/SIEA, S/IGAP and the TUG Flap. I am relocating
to Manhattan and will be working with Dr. Allen and his associates,
but will also be available to operate in Charleston, South Carolina
by request.
