The clinical practice of Richard L. Shapiro, M.D., FACS, is focused on the comprehensive care of patients with Breast Cancer, Malignant Melanoma, unusual skin cancers (Merkel cell), and other soft tissue tumors (Sarcomas). His goal is to offer state-of-the-art surgical care to the patient and their family within a multidisciplinary framework in a personalized, compassionate, and dignified environment and to return the patient to a normal life as quickly as possible.

Dr. Shapiro believes that cosmetic considerations are crucial and are achieved by meticulous attention to detail, newly refined minimally invasive surgical techniques, and working closely with our team of plastic reconstructive surgeons. He was one of the first surgeons at NYU Medical Center to perform, critically evaluate, and refine the technique of sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy in patients with melanoma. After performing this technique in several hundred patients with melanoma, he has adapted it successfully to the treatment of patients with cancer of the breast and tumors of the skin and soft tissues. Dr Shapiro currently has the largest experience with nipple areolar sparing mastectomy and has successfully performed more of these complex procedures than all other oncologic surgeons at NYU combined. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts, and has lectured regionally, internationally, and through the media and was recently featured prominently in an EMMY award winning television program addressing the treatment of young women with breast cancer. He is also a frequent speaker at SHARE, where he helps breast cancer patients and their families to better understand their pathology reports and treatment options. Dr. Shapiro has been intimately involved in the Melanoma Vaccine Program at NYU Medical Center, and to date has personally treated over 700 melanoma patients with immunotherapy. For the past 19 years he has been involved as an investigator in numerous clinical trials of biological and chemotherapeutic agents for patients with melanoma and breast cancer. In 1993 he created the first multidisciplinary oncology clinic at NYU Medical Center when he became Director of and reorganized the Breast Cancer service at Bellevue Hospital. The success of that program serves as a model of how to deliver efficient state-of-the-art multidisciplinary care to patients with cancer in a non-threatening and compassionate environment.

More recently, he has created and directs an interdepartmental Multidisciplinary Melanoma Conference, which meets each month to review the care of patients with melanoma at the Cancer center. In addition, he is a member of the Melanoma Clinical Trials Review Committee, through which new treatment modalities are presented and critically evaluated before being initiated, and is a founding member of the internationally respected NYU Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group of physicians and researchers dedicated to the study and treatment of malignant melanoma .Currently Dr Shapiro has been appointed as the Director of Surgical Oncology Operations at the NYU Clinical Cancer Center and serves as a liason to the Department of Surgery. Dr. Shapiro created and maintains a Melanoma and Breast Cancer Research Fund at the NYU Clinical Cancer Center and has generated over $3 million dollars for oncologic research and resident training at NYU. He also works closely with medical students, residents, and fellows in educating them on how to attend to the medical and emotional needs of patients and their families.

Dr. Shapiro is a native New Yorker who, after graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, attended NYU School of Medicine where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed an internship and residency in General Surgery at NYU, serving as Chief and Executive Chief resident under Dr. Frank C. Spencer. After his residency, he accepted the Landsberg-Zale Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at NYU. During that period he also studied, in the basic science research laboratory, the complex relationship between tumor metastasis and angiogenesis. This activity led to numerous publications and a National Institute of Health (NIH) Career Development Award Grant. Dr. Shapiro is an active member of many medical societies, including the American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association for Cancer Research, Alpha Omega Alpha, Association for Academic Surgery, American Society of Breast Surgeons. He is listed in numerous top doctors registries including Castle Connolly Top Doctors New York, New York Magazine, and Americas Top Doctors for Cancer.
